NOMADIC STATEHOOD, STEPPE EMPIRES, AND SOCIOECONOMIC DYNAMICS IN THE ARAL CASPIAN MACRO-REGION (9TH–14TH CENTURIES)

Abstract

This study investigates the evolution of nomadic political structures, socio-spatial organization, and inter-regional economic relations across the Aral-Caspian macro-region—with a specific focus on the Ustyurt Plateau—between the 9th and 14th centuries CE. Examining the consecutive geopolitical dominance of the Oghuz, Qipchaq, and Golden Horde polities, this paper analyzes how nomadic statehood operated within arid transitional zones. Moving beyond traditional external paradigms that characterize nomadic societies as stateless or parasitic entities, the research demonstrates that these nomadic confederations developed sophisticated administrative traditions, military-political institutions, and controlled commercial infrastructure. Drawing upon historical-archaeological data, written sources, and ethnological frameworks, the paper illustrates how pastoral economies dynamically integrated with international trade networks and sedentary oasis markets, shaping the geopolitical matrix of medieval Eurasia.
